History of
(continued)
Prior to Blueberry Briar being erected on this special site, this land was used as a dairy farm and as a haven for wild blueberries, both of which were sold at market.

The original designers/owners were well ahead of their time when they built this custom designed house, using Anderson windows and a floor plan that stand up to modern day scrutiny. They spared no expense in the quality of wood they used, in the massive Newport chimney they erected or in the interior details. For example, to take advantage of both the fireplace in the living room on one side and the majestic views on the other, the original owners had an immense bow window installed to take advantage of both the flames of the fire dancing in the panes and the amazing sunsets in the afternoon.

Like us, we are told that they wanted a gracious but unpretentious house that was beautiful in design and architecturally pleasing in every detail. Other than enlarging and redesigning the kitchen significantly (and redoing all the bathrooms), Blueberry Briar has retained its understated eloquence. It is a much-admired house among the town, and everyone knows its location. As an aside this house has no real “front”. It was designed that the street side looks like the front, and also when you travel down its long private driveway the house from that angle also appears to be the front of the house.

This house is magical in how it keeps unfolding. Guests always marvel in how each room leads to another unexpected room. Friends have said to me, “ Your house feels like it just keeps opening into another whole new space.” Each of these rooms has more windows than are even used in the most upscale houses built today.

The yard has approximately 5 acres of mostly landscaped areas. There are the hundreds of bushes of wild blueberries that exist between the land and the road. On the street side of the house, we rebuilt the original stonewall and planted 100s of day lilies adjacent to it. We have multiple perennial gardens; a large deck for easy access to entertaining and it is situated behind the house facing this massive blue Spruce tree. We are told that the original owners used to decorate it each Christmas with a massive number of white lights. There are also multiple other seating areas. One has Adirondack chairs next to a hammock under a number of large pine tress. We are told that the original owners had this landscaped beautifully in the same casual, understated way the house presents. Continuous landscaping has been done to regain the original feeling. We have stayed away from the typical planting that new builders use and have instead tried to recreate a very special and comfortable kind of ambience inside and out.
