Farm Pond

Farm Pond is one of the three cleanest and clearest bodies of water in MA. Formed by a departed glacier 12,000 years ago, Farm Pond literally is the size of a lake, despite its name. It spans 124 acres and is 53 feet deep at its deepest point.

Over the years, Farm Pond has served a number of functions including fishing and ice harvesting in the late 1800s. Also, in the mid to late 1800s its fame grew so wide that several of the most elite Boston families built summer mansions in Sherborn so that they would have beach access.

Today Farm Pond is one the town’s most protected resources. There is a Farm Pond Advisory Committee that oversees rules and regulations to maintain its unusual purity. Boats must be inspected before launching to insure that new species of flora are not introduced. There are no motorboats allowed because of the pollution that would occur.  There is a very active Sherborn Yacht Club that anyone who loves sailing is invited to join. It is directly adjacent to the resident only public swimming area.

If not interested in becoming a member of the Yacht Club, residents may buy permits to keep their own boats on moorings. On any summer day, the bather will see many sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and other non-motorized water craft. The beach is appropriately cordoned off to protect swimmers.

In the summer, swimming lessons are provided; the beach is well staffed with lifeguards, a Waterfront Director, and many Sherborn families choose to swim here rather than heading to the ocean further east. This natural gathering area provides a plethora of activities through the town's Recreation Department and through "The Friends of Farm Pond."

Adjacent to the resident only parking area, the town has built a stone bathhouse that is kept exceedingly clean, and all swimmers are expected to shower before heading to the beach.

While cherished by old and young alike for the recreational activities that Farm Pond provides, it is still a very active wildlife habitat. The fish are plentiful and on any given day the bather will see geese, blue heron, eagles, and hawks. In fact, some of the species are very rare and Sherborn residents are very protective of maintaining this very important town resource for all to enjoy and for generations to come.
